Direct thermal labels are typically made from heat-sensitive paper. This paper contains a special coating that reacts to heat, turning dark when exposed to the thermal printhead of the printer. There are also synthetic options available for more durable applications.

White polyimide labels with strong acrylic adhesive are durable, heat-resistant labels designed for harsh environments like printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing, offering excellent solvent and wash resistance. The white, printable topcoat provides good contrast for barcodes and is compatible with thermal transfer printing, while the high-temperature permanent acrylic adhesive ensures a strong bond even through processes like wave soldering and chemical washing. These labels are often UL-approved and used in electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries for reliable traceability and labeling.

The standard paper have removable adhesive (often refured to as Peelable or Low Tack adhesive) and thermal coating so they not require any kind of ink ribbon.
